Is Microsoft’s Bing Any Good? Want To Compare Bing, Yahoo and Google Search Results Side By Side?

Microsoft launched their new search engine, Bing, a few days earlier than expected. Some people love it, some say it is as bad as Live, some say it's results are very similar to Google's.  Anyway we have updated SEO Lab Gold and Pro because of the change from Live to Bing.

You can compare the search engine results from Google, Yahoo and Bing side by side using a unique 3 column window in SEO Lab Professional or Gold.

Bing has better support for geo-targeting compared to the older Microsoft Live.

Here is a screen shot of the Search Engine Result Comparewindow in SEO Lab Professional.

Google Keyword Tool Updated

Good Keywords v3 Beta

Google has updated the ad-words keyword tool. The "approximate avg. search volume" has now become "Global Monthly Search Volume". This means that the search volumes are based on all countries and languages and not targeted to a specific country or language. You can still see the "local search volume" (based on the targeted country  and language) for the previous month.

This update seems to be a part of the new Adword interface rollout that happened today (this was in beta for a while). The new interface appears to require Firefox, Google Chrome or IE7 (it has problems with IE8!).

We have updated Good Keywords v3 and SEO Lab to account for the change in the column names in the CSV files exported from the Google keyword Tool.

We have also improved the Site Analyzer Tool in SEO Lab.

Get more out of Good Keywords v3 and SEO Lab Pro

Open the Google Keyword Tool Within the Software Interface

Good Keywords v3 (and SEO Lab Pro) normally opens the Google Keyword Suggestion Tool in the default browser. You can make the software open it within itself. To do this, simply click on the round "Sn" icon on the top left of the software window and select the "Application Settings" menu option. Then un-check the "Open Google KWT in Browser" box.

Application Settings

If you have a Google Accountyou may want to login. This will allow you to use the Google Keyword Tool without the captcha security prompt.

Generate Misspelled Keywords

The KW Manager (KW Builder in SEO Lab)  can be used to generate misspelled keywords. To do this, select one of the "My Keyword Lists" within the KW Manager / Builder and enter the keyword phrases into it. Now select the "Misspell" ribbon button in the "Multiply keywords" group. This will generate misspelled combinations for all the keywords in the list.

Generate Large Number of Keyword Phrases by Combining Keywords

You can create a large number of keyword phrases by re-combining the words in existing phrases. Use the "Recombine" button in the "Multiply keywords" group in KW Manager / Builder.

For example, if you have a keyword phrase like

wedding reception decoration ideas

The re-combine option will create

wedding reception decoration ideas
wedding reception ideas decoration
wedding decoration reception ideas
wedding decoration ideas reception
wedding ideas reception decoration
wedding ideas decoration reception
reception wedding decoration ideas
reception wedding ideas decoration
reception decoration wedding ideas
reception decoration ideas wedding

and so on…

Now delete the phrases that make absolutely no sense but keep the good ones.

How To Group and Organize Keywords Using Keyword Pad

Keyword Pad is a simple, powerful, free Windows keyword software tool for cleaning, modifying, multiplying, grouping and organizing large Pay Per Click (PPC) keyword lists. Here is a simple tutorial that explains how you can group and organize keywords containing specific phrases from a large list.

Click here to download keyword Pad. It is free!

Keyword Pad

1. Import Keywords Into Keyword Pad

You can add keywords into Keyword Pad by using the Add or Import buttons. If you have a text file containing the keywords, simply use the import button. Make sure that the text file contains each keyword phrase in a separate line.

2. Delete Duplicates and Unwanted Keywords

The next step is to get rid of unwanted keyword phrases. First select the Delete > Duplicate Entries option to remove any duplicates.

Now use one more more of the options under the Delete button to remove unwanted entries. Here are some examples of what you can do

  • Remove all entries that contain more than 5 words
  • Remove all one word entries
  • Remove all entries that contain a specific word
  • Remove all entries that contains a specific word at the end

You can also remove unwanted punctuations and characters from the list using the options under the Clean button. For example, you can remove all repeated spaces, or quotation or question marks, etc.

In the end, use the duplicate removal option again to remove new duplicates that may have formed while cleaning the keyword entries.

3. Find Keywords Containing Specific Phrases and Export Them

The Highlight button contains a number of options to highlight keywords containing the terms you specify. For example, if you list is about web hosting, you may want to group all the dedicated hosting related terms together. Use the Highlight > Entries That Contain > Word Anywhere and type in words that are related to dedicated hosting. These may include words like dedicated, enterprise hosting, etc and even names of companies that are known to provide only dedicated hosting.

Once the corresponding entries are highlighted, use the Export > Highlighted words to text file option to save the selected keyword phrases in a separate text file.

4. Remove the Exported Keywords from Main List

If your intention is to organize and split a large keyword list into independent smaller sets for PPC advertising (eg. Google Adwords) you wouldn't want the same keyword phrase in two lists. You can use the Delete > Only Highlighted Entries option to delete the highlighted entries before starting over from step-3.

Good Keywords v3 – The Most Commonly Asked Question!

The Keyword Manager Tool in Good Keywords v3 and the Keyword database tool in SEO Lab Professional will allow you to import the CSV files from the Google keyword tool. The number of users of these tools have almost tripled in January and some of them seem to have run into a very common mistake when exporting the CSV file from the Google Keyword Tool.

Why is the import CSV option not working for some of you? The following screen shot may provide some clues!

Exporting the CSV file from Google keyword tool.

The Keyword Database tool in SEOLab Pro is much more advanced than the one available in the free Good Keywords v3. SEOLab Pro allows you to import unlimited number of keywords and also imports additional data like Cost per Click (CPC). Make sure that you use the ".CSV for Excel" option (as seen above) if you need the CPC data. Google doesn't export the data properly if you use the ".CSV" option and the currency data has commas in it.

Google Keyword Matching Options

Ever since the Google Keyword Tool started showing the search volume counts, people have become confused about the keyword match modes shown within the tool and actual phrase searches in Google. The problem is mainly because Google Keyword Tool displays exact match terms within a pair of [square brackets].

Google Match Modes

Remember that the Google keyword Tool is primarily meant for Google advertisers. The square brackets are used in Adword settings to specify that an ad-text be shown only when the exact phrase is typed in as a search query.

To do a phrase search in Google you should use quotes!

Because of seeing square brackets for exact search, people assume that they should use [] to do an exact phrase search in Google!

This is not so! You should use quotes to do exact searches and not square brackets.

You can  easily verify this…

[domain name software] – 7,080,000 results in Google US (as on 12 Oct 2008)

"domain name software" – 48,200 results in Google US (as on 12 Oct 2008)

It is obvious that Google treats [domain name software] and domain name software almost the same!

Differences between various Google Match Modes

Google Adwords uses four different match modes.  These are already explained well in the official Google documentation about match modes. But we still get a lot of emails asking about this.

Broad match

If your keyword is luxury car rental, the ad-text will show for any of the following searches…

  • luxury
  • car
  • rental
  • car rental
  • rental car
  • cheap car rental
  • luxury car rental
  • car rental luxury
  • luxury hotels
  • used car

It is obvious that broad match will trigger the maximum number of advertisements and that you have to be very careful with it. If your business is  luxury car rental, you do not want to trigger advertisements for terms like cheap car rental and used cars!

Phrase Match

Phrase match gives you a little more control because the words now have to appear in the same order. For example, if your keyword is "car rental" (within quotes), the following searches will trigger the ad…

  • Europe car rental
  • car rental Atlanta
  • luxury car rental
  • cheap car rental

But it will not trigger ads for

  • rental car
  • rental luxury cars
  • car Atlanta rental
  • car cheap rental
  • car rent

Exact Match

Exact match means exactly that… if your keyword is [luxury car rental] (within square brackets), the ads will trigger when some one searches for luxury car rental and nothing else. The ads will not show if some one searches for luxury car rental Atlanta!

Negative Match

Use negative match to fix the broad match problem mentioned above. If you add -cheap as a keyword, Google will not trigger ads if the word cheap is present anywhere in the search query. If you use a lot of broad match terms, the negative keywords are very very important. In such cases, not using negative keywords in your Google Adword campaign will most likely result in huge costs and no benefits!

Tip: Make Sure That All Your Google Keyword Research is Never Lost!

Good Keywords v3 beta is now available and the first tool we have included is a little but powerful utility to manage the CSV files created by the Google keyword tool. Use it to import the CSV files into a local database. Then use the built-in query box to list any keywords you need!

The database created by Good keywords v3 is permanently available to you. You can even open it using the database tool of Open-Office or Microsoft Office!

You can download the current beta version from the Good Keywords home page
