Why Web Page Rank Checking is a Waste Of Time!

We often get emails asking if SEOLab can be used to check web page rankings. We do have an article posted at the website explaining why SEO Lab is not a rank checking tool. Anyway, here is why we think rank checking is a waste of time.

  1. Checking the rank of your URLs is not going to help you get traffic. The time is better spend doing other things that will get you more traffic.
  2. Your server log files already contain information about which search engines and keywords are sending you traffic.
  3. The Google Webmaster Tools provide detailed reports about the searches and the click through percentages. If you haven’t signed up and added your sites to Google Webmaster tools, do so now.

The ultimate reason for any Search Engine Optimization is to help customers find your product or service. This involves having a clear grasp about your business, your customer’s problems and the possible solutions to his problems. Use this knowledge to create good web pages that work perfectly for your visitors.

We suggest that you learn more about your customers, their  options and how your competition is thinking and so on. We believe SEO Lab Professional / Gold is the best tool for this.

Most professional SEO Experts already do all this using a browser. SEO Lab makes the same information accessible to any one while presenting the data in a clean interface so that the required useful information can be identified, understood, digested and acted upon.

Different types of websites!

Made For AdSense (MFA)

These exist for one reason and one reason only, to put advertisements (read Google AdSense) and make money. The content is not considered important. Some MFA experts even consider good content to be a bad idea because the visitor may actually read it instead of clicking the advertisement link!

The Parked Domain

A variation of type-1.  Failed MFA domains often end up here with a different owner.

The top domain name speculators do make a lot of money through parked domains and by buying and selling domains. However, a large number of domains are just parked at the registrar. The only thing the domain owner does is pay the registration fee to the registrar. The domain registrars must love these customers!

Email Grabber

These are the ones interested only in grabbing your email address. These often include an offer to turn visitors into millionaires if they subscribe to the newsletter. These are sometimes padded with some extra stuff to make it compatible with what Google considers “good user experience”.

Random Personal Blog

When you think your personal opinion on everything under the sun is very important to the rest of the world!

The good ones become famous and go on to bigger things. Some do alright and even make some money with AdSense. The vast majority adandon their blogs after a while!

The affiliate multi store

These are created by people who bought that $29 ebook on how to make “instant money” as an affiliate.  The website is then filled with affiliate banners in all colors and shapes that offer to make everyone a millionaire.  Most of these sites never really get any traffic. Some of these turn into “guru-bashing” blogs after a while.

Abandoned orphans

This is where many of the sites from above finally end up! Most sites get abandoned because the owner either got bored or didn’t have an actual plan.  Some abandon their efforts because they didn’t see any quick results (the ebook said making money is so easy!)

Why is So Much of SEO Related Information Contradictory or Confusing?

This was a question sent to our support email by an anonymous person with a fake return email address. Even though we couldn’t reply to him, here are the reasons for “some” of the Search Engine Optimization related information being contradictory!

SEO Resources

We will of course use Google as an example.

Whenever Megan searches on Google, it is in Google’s best interest to make sure that she finds what she is looking for.  If Google were to show irrelevant or useless results, Megan will decide to check this other search engine called, what was that,  Bing?

The algorithms used by Google to decide which results are relevant to Megan is Google’s proprietary information.  Google is not going to open up their source code and tell us the exact way their algorithms work.

According to Google, there are over 200 factors that decide the order in which the search results are finally sorted and displayed to the user.

So, how do we know what are the best SEO practices?  SEO specialists try and piece together this information from…

  1. What the search engines tell us to do through their “best practice guidelines
  2. Clues based on the patents filed by various search companies.
  3. What we learn by analysing the search engine result pages (SERP).
  4. What common sense says Google and other search engines will want to do.
  5. Ideas and insights from people who are good at figuring things out.
  6. Opinions from people based on what they want to believe, based on random observations or based on some “school of  thought” they belong to.
  7. Misinformation from people who have a vested interest.

Most controversies and contradictions arise because of  6 and 7.

The best way to separate the bad from the good is to verify things on your own and apply common sense.
