No More CN Domain Registrations through Overseas Registrars
CNNIC, the official registry for .CN, has temporarily stopped overseas registrars from offering .CN domains. The ban is with effect from January 6, 2010.
This is supposedly because of difficulties with implementing the new registration application procedures.

ICANN – Fast Track Plan for IDN ccTLDs in Characters Other Than ASCII or Latin
We have been getting questions about our domain name portfolio management software products and support for IDNs. Most of our software products already support second level IDN (International Domain Names). Please see the earlier blog post that was made more than an year ago.
Internationalized Domain Names (IDN)
The new ICANN initiative (IDN TLDs) is simply an extension so that even the TLD / ccTLD part can be in other languages. This is not problem for us and we will also support it in our domain name software products as and when it becomes a reality.
For more information please see the ICANN documentation on IDNs

Freeware Rewind: Filter Domain Names From Large Lists
Domain Name Filter is a free software we released many years ago. Don’t let it’s age fool you, it is an “ever-green” domain name tool.
You need Domain Name Filter if you work with large lists of domain names. You can use it to pick domain names that contain specific keywords at the start, end or in the middle, filter domain names based on the length (domains longer than 5 characters, shorter than 25 characters, etc.) and so on.

ICANN wants comments on domain name recovery when registrants forget to renew their domains
ICANN has asked for public comments about the “post expiration domain recovery” procedure. A working group has been setup to answer the following questions.
- Whether adequate opportunity exists for registrants to redeem their expired domain names;
- Whether expiration-related provisions in typical registration agreements are clear and conspicuous enough;
- Whether adequate notice exists to alert registrants of upcoming expirations;
- Whether additional measures need to be implemented to indicate that once a domain name enters the Auto-Renew Grace Period, it has expired (e.g., hold status, a notice on the site with a link to information on how to renew, or other options to be determined);
- Whether to allow the transfer of a domain name during the Redemption Grace Period (RGP).
You can submit comments till september 10, 2009. Please visit the following page for more details.

Using the Domain Finder in Domain Punch Pro or Watch My Domains
The newer versions of Domain Punch Pro and Watch My Domains ISP split the domain name search part and the domain name management part into separate tabs.
So, to search for available domains, you should use the Finder tab.
The domain name finder first checks if a domain has a valid A (DNS) record to check if the domain is registered or not. If it doesn’t find a valid IP address, it will do a whois lookup. This minimizes the number of whois lookups and also increases the speed of lookups. Also, this method will appeal to people who are paranoid about their domain name searches.
The Problem
This method will not work if you use OpenDNS for your DNS or if your ISP automatically resolves all domain names.
The Fix
You can fix this problem by adding the OpenDNS IPs to the invalid IPs list. To find the IP to add, lookup an obviously made up (unregistered) domain name like, for example,

How To Use Watch My Domains ISP on a Shared Network
Many of our customers use the site license version of Watch My Domains ISP to manage their domain name portfolio. The shared domain database is accessed from different work stations. This allows multiple users to work on a centralized domain name portfolio database.
To do this, simply setup a shared network folder that will hold the database. Configure all Watch My Domains ISP work-stations to use this shared folder.
Make sure that you have purchased a site license to be able to run multiple instances. Site licenses are not expensive and you can easily upgrade single user licenses to site licenses by contacting us or by clicking on the red-toolbox button on top right corner of the Watch My Domains ISP software window.

Domain Name Theft: First Ever Criminal Prosecution
Domain Name News has reported the first ever criminal prosecution case for domain name theft.
The case involves the alleged theft of the domain p2p.com by the accused Daniel Goncalves. He reportedly hacked into an AOL email account and then used it to internally push the domain name to his account at GoDaddy. The domain was subsequently sold on eBay for $111,000 to Mark Madsen, NBA basketball player.
On July 30th, Daniel Goncalves was arrested at his home in New Jersey.
