ICANN Gains Independence From US Control

The US Commerce Department and ICANN have entered into an “affirmation of commitments” that will see ICANN gaining some independence from US control over it’s operations.

Here are some quotes…

“DOC affirms its commitment to a multi-stakeholder, private sector led, bottom-up policy development model for DNS technical coordination that acts for the benefit of global Internet users…”

“DOC recognizes the importance of global Internet users being able to use the Internet in their local languages and character sets, and endorses the rapid introduction of internationalized country code top level domain names (ccTLDs)…”

Google Adwords Ban For “Bad” Quality Landing Pages?

There is a heated discussion going on at WebMasterWorld about Google sending out emails threatening an Adwords ban if bad quality landing pages are submitted often.

Since Google provides only vague definitions about quality, it is difficult for advertisers to really understand any such new “rule”.

It is also possible that this entire episode is because of a software hitch at Google (the emails are automated messages).

Read more at Webmasterworld!

On the other hand, this could also mean Google getting rid of all those questionale “me too” advertisements created by affiliates.

A Simple PHP Whois Script For Domain Name Lookups

We have had some requests for a server based whois script to use with Domain Punch Pro and Watch My Domains ISP.

So, here is a simple PHP script (less than 130 lines) that you can use. Upload it to your server and specify the appropriate settings in your whois setup (within Domain Punch Pro or Watch My Domains).

Please note that this script uses port 43 whois servers. It doesn’t support domains that have no port 43 whois server. It is useful if your company network doesn’t allow connections through port 43 or if you are unable to lookup some domains using your ISP.

Click here to download simple PHP Whois script.

Previous blog post about web based whois.

The script supports a number of port 43 whois servers. You can add more by editing the script. It is simply provided for your guidance. You can use it as it is or modify it as you wish. We are unable to provide additional support for this script.

Here are the required settings (assumes that it is uploaded as yourdomain.com/scripts/whois.php)

Whois Server: www.yourdomain.com
Port: 80
Comand Line: GET /scripts/whois.php?domain={D}

Important: Please note down the other settings like date format, search token, etc. for any port 43 whois server you want to replace with the server script. You will have to add them back after you change the above settings.

Also, be aware that other people can use this script from your server if they know the URL to it. We suggest that you modify it to prevent others from accessing it. You could, for example, change the name of the GET parameter used for passing the domain name or add additional verification data.

Using Web Based Whois (HTTP Proxy) Lookups in Domain Name Management Software

The newer builds of our Domain Name Management Software products support web based (http proxy) for whois lookups.

You will need to host a web server script that does whois lookup. The script should accept parameters using the GET method and shouldn’t use any challenge-response system.

The whois is setup is done in the same way it is done for regular port-43 configuration.

Assume that your whois lookup page is at

http://www.yourdomain.com/whois?domain=example.com

You should enter the following in the whois setup dialog.

Whois Server: www.yourdomain.com
Port: 80
Comand Line: GET /whois?domain={D}

Please fill in the other settings like date format, search token, etc. based on the actual whois record data as returned by your script.

Diagnostic Port 43 Whois Tool in Domain Punch Pro and Watch My Domains

All our domain name portfolio management software tools (Domain Punch Pro, Watch My Domains ISP and Pro) include a diagnostic port 43 whois lookup tool.

This is available from the Config Tab > Popup Whois ribbon button (Tools > Popup Whois Tool menu in older versions).

To check a domain name type in the whois server and the domain name into the appropriate boxes and then click ‘Go’.

Port 43 Whois Tool: Domain Name Software

The port 43 whois tool is very handy if you have problems looking up domain names.

If the tool is unable to connect to any whois server, one of the following is true.

  • Your internet connection is down
  • Your computer security software, company network or ISP is blocking port 43 connections.

If the tool is unable to connect to a particular whois server alone, it is possible that your IP address is bannedat the whois server or the whois server itself is down.

Using whois.iana.org to find Whois Servers

In some cases you can use the whois tool to determine the valid whois serverfor a country or top level domain by querying whois.iana.org. For example to find the whois server for query whois.iana.org for it. Now look through the whois output and you will find the whois server listed as

Whois Server (port 43): whois.nic.it

Why Web Page Rank Checking is a Waste Of Time!

We often get emails asking if SEOLab can be used to check web page rankings. We do have an article posted at the website explaining why SEO Lab is not a rank checking tool. Anyway, here is why we think rank checking is a waste of time.

  1. Checking the rank of your URLs is not going to help you get traffic. The time is better spend doing other things that will get you more traffic.
  2. Your server log files already contain information about which search engines and keywords are sending you traffic.
  3. The Google Webmaster Tools provide detailed reports about the searches and the click through percentages. If you haven’t signed up and added your sites to Google Webmaster tools, do so now.

The ultimate reason for any Search Engine Optimization is to help customers find your product or service. This involves having a clear grasp about your business, your customer’s problems and the possible solutions to his problems. Use this knowledge to create good web pages that work perfectly for your visitors.

We suggest that you learn more about your customers, their  options and how your competition is thinking and so on. We believe SEO Lab Professional / Gold is the best tool for this.

Most professional SEO Experts already do all this using a browser. SEO Lab makes the same information accessible to any one while presenting the data in a clean interface so that the required useful information can be identified, understood, digested and acted upon.

Keyword Research – Why Regional Search Statistic is More Important in Many Cases!

Many people use the global search volumes provided by the Google Keyword Tool and ignore the local search volumes when doing Keyword Research. However, the global search volumes are no longer a useful parameter in many cases.

Here is a screen shot of the search trends for the keyword phrase “domain name registration”. Note that US doesn’t figure in the top 10 countries in the chart. If you are doing the keyword research for a site that targets US customers, the global search trends are almost irrelevant!

There are a large number of English speaking Internet users in other parts of the Globe and the searches from those regions are now a lot higher than what it was a few years ago. Take this into account when doing keyword research.

The Google Keyword Tool provides both global search volumes and a local search volumes. The local search volumes are provided for the previous month.

In software like Good Keywords v3 and SEO Lab Professional, you can enable the display of the local monthly volumes by right clicking within the list and selecting “setup columns”. Then check the box for the corresponding month column.
