We sometimes get emails from potential customers asking us if our software products are safe to download. This has become more frequent because of fake anti-virus software products that infect websites and create popups telling site visitors that their computer is infected.  The idea is to scare the user into downloading the fake anti-virus software.

We normally respond by sending the customer a link to VirusTotal. VirusTotal is a free online service that checks software using multiple anti-virus tools. After you download any software from the Internet to your hard disk, don't run it immediately. Open VirusTotal in your browser and upload the file to it. You will soon see the results of the scan.

We also digitally sign our software products before uploading to our servers. If any one modifies a digitally signed software, the signature verfication will fail. When you install the software, make sure that Windows identifies the publisher as Softnik Technologies. If the file has been modified, Windows will report the publisher as unknown.
