Internet Keyword Research – Are you putting the cart before the horse?

… continued from history of keyword research.

It is quite clear that the old method of keyword research and web page creation will no longer work. Filling the web with spammy junk is not going to help any one. Anyway, Google and other search engines are always trying hard to get rid of these junk pages from their search results.

Using keyword research to decide your website content is like putting the cart before the horse.  Instead, try the usual time tested approach.

Keyword Research

  • Make a list of business ideas you are interested in.
  • Use search engines to research each one.
  • Find the related keywords for each niche and then spend some time looking at the competition and the sites that feed that niche.
  • If you find an interesting business idea try and learn everything you can about it
  • Create a target market snapshot view and a simple business plan.
  • Create your website and start marketing your product or service. See five ways to get that initial traffic!
  • Tweak and track results often to improve your Return On Investment.
  • Never stop your keyword research. Use on-line tools and software like Keyword Strategy Studio to find new keywords.

Doing the above extra work will put you miles ahead of any one who creates automated web pages!

While doing any keyword research remember the following…

  • Any traffic that comes through organic search engine results is never permanent. Don’t expect such traffic to last for ever. One Google update and it could be gone forever.
  • There is nothing better if you can make other site owners link to your site without you having to ask. Once you achieve that, search engines will always find your site and list your web pages.
  • Finding a niche that has almost no competition doesn’t mean you have hit Jackpot. The most probable reason for the missing competition is that there is no hungry market for that product. Always make sure that your product or service fills a valid need. Please see five types of products that people will always want to buy.
  • Conversely, a niche with a lot of competition doesn’t mean you can’t successfully enter that market. The key is to analyze the competition and find holes that you can successfully fill. Keyword Strategy Studio (part of IM Toolpad) is a fantastic software tool for doing just that.
